ADULT SAILING PROGRAM

SSYC is a great place for adults to learn to sail. The Shrewsbury River is a protected area which is ideal for learning to sail. Our instruction is tailored to meet the needs of individual students. We will help you take your sailing to the next level whether you have never sailed, have some experience and want to learn more, or you are an experienced sailor wanting to hone your skills learning from experienced sailors. Classes are offered on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings or Saturday mornings, June - July. Register early as there are capacity limits on all sessions.

Novice Sailors - Students get instruction and sailing experience in the fundamentals of safety, rigging, launching, steering, sail handling, sailing upwind and downwind, tacking and jibing and docking. Students require some physical agility for small boat sailing. Students will practice these skills on at the water in small boats with instruction from experienced sailors.

Intermediate Sailors - Students get instruction tailored to their needs to develop and build upon their sailing skills. More experienced sailors will be introduced to the finer points of sail trim, including understanding sail shape for various wind conditions and sea states. Crew weight and boat balance for optimal performance in various conditions. Students will practice coordination of helm and sheet, recognizing wind shifts, gusts and lulls and reacting to these changes. Students require some physical agility for small boat sailing, as they will practice these skills on the water in small boats with instruction from experienced instructors.

Private Instruction: Private one on one instruction for any SSYC member a can be arranged by contacting the the Adult Sailing program chair by email at adultsail@ssyc.us. Non members who are enrolled in our adult sailing class are also invited to supplement their instruction and time on the water with private lessons. Private lessons are limited to students registered in the Adult program or SSYC members.
